Spending too much time playing video games was one of the most common reasons most of us got scolded by our parents. Gaming, be it on computers or mobile devices, has become an integral part of our lives. The thrill of clearing new levels, discussing them with our friends and defeating the last boss gives us a sense of achievement that often surpasses many other experiences. During those times, we played games purely for fun — until the advent of esports transformed the landscape.

Esports, or electronic sports, refers to competitive video gaming, often pursued professionally. It has become the dream career of many teenagers in recent years, especially after the pandemic. People are on the internet like never before. The increasing popularity of gamers and the luxurious lifestyle shown on social media are a major inspiration for the young generation. Gamers have received an excessive amount of attention on the internet. Young gamers worship their favourite esports athlete and aspire to become like them. They idolise famous gamers with the dream of achieving fame and money through gaming.

But do you think Esports is a good career option? Indeed, this seems like a tempting option. Imagine playing our favourite game all day long with our friends. Living a luxurious life, having a huge fan following, and getting invited to the biggest and most prestigious events. It seems like a dream come true.

Is this dream which we see from afar actually true? Research has shown excessive gaming can have a significant negative impact on relationships, education, career, sleep, mental and physical health, stress, maladaptive coping, and other important life areas. Moreover, esports is an extremely competitive domain. Not every aspiring gamer can become successful.

Gaming is one of the fastest-growing industries not just all over the world but also in India. Yet we need to remember only a few gamers end up making a lot of money and a name for themselves. Most gamers remain unknown, often not getting sponsors and offers from big teams. Even successful esports athletes have to face a lot of mental pressure. The pressure they experience is not any different from professional basketball and football players. Performance in front of a large crowd, coping with negative reactions and harassment, maintaining a positive attitude throughout the tournament and communicating issues with teammates all stack up to increase their stress levels. Some esports athletes have abandoned their glamorous careers due to mental and physical health issues, including eye fatigue, back pain, and wrist pain.

But does that mean esports and gaming have nothing positive to offer? Have we, as a society, created games solely to profit at the expense of others’ well-being?

Well, the answer is NO.

A study by Oxford University reveals that gaming in moderation and a controlled environment may improve one’s mental well-being. Moderate gaming, involving titles such as Candy Crush, Angry Birds, and Limbo, can reduce negative effects and promote enjoyment, a state of flow, and motivation. Purpose-built gaming accessories can also aid in the development of coordination and motor skills in children.

Growing up we all played a lot of games. We continue to enjoy them in our leisure time, while travelling, or even during significant tasks. Esports and gaming cannot be labelled as good or bad. If it does not create a negative impact on our lives, it is one of the most enjoyable things to do. Our experiences, opinions, and circumstances vary, making it essential for each of us to determine the appropriate level of gaming for ourselves and the younger generation, or even decide to not play any computer games and instead go out for a walk!
