What is TED and who are we?
“What is TED?”
To a question asked a hundred times over, here comes our terse answer.
TED — standing for technology, entertainment and design — is a nonprofit organisation that basically helps a diverse set of people share ideas that are worth spreading.
“That sounds great (boring)! How exactly does TED do it?”
It’s often difficult to keep an audience interested in your idea, for too long. As an immediate example, we aren’t quite sure if you’ve made it till here. Communicating this message via speech — ideally, along with a skillfully narrated anecdote, delivered right to your eardrum by a gifted storyteller — would’ve made it a lot more captivating.
Which is what a TED talk aims to do.
In a TED talk, narrators (who may not always be popular, but are always super cool) take the centre stage and share their very awesome/mind-blowing/world-changing idea with you by engaging you in a mini story, of sorts. These mini stories have unique settings, and they engage different facets of your perception of reality, and/or your imagination, to send across a message that has the potential to change your life. Over the years, TED has been able to gather a rather impressive bunch of people to deliver talks, multiple of which have emerged as internet sensations. Many of us self proclaimed TED talk addicts can vouch for the fact that they are among the best things to get hooked on to.
“So, what’s the x for?”
The x in TEDx implies that the event is being independently organised by a group (in our case, our school) under a free license by TED, and can be thought of as a local TED talk bonanza. Wholesome as it sounds, each TEDx event has a theme of its own, and provides a platform for individuals from in and around a community to interact with curious people and share stories that hold the power to kindle a variety of conversations, revolving around the many possible interpretations of the theme. An engaging, arousing and exhilarating day awaits!
“When is our TEDx event scheduled for, and how do I register myself for it?”
You can expect the next edition of TEDxIITGuwahati to take place early into 2021. TED puts a cap on the number of people that can attend a TEDx event, which means, we’re open to a 100 registrations each for the morning and afternoon slots. We’ll be announcing how to go about the registration process, soon!
Glad you made it all the way here! Our social media handles will tell you everything you need to know about our event, and here they are. See you there!
